BSNL Loses 50,000 Broadband Subscribers in October, Airtel and Jio See Gains: TRAI


The latest report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TROI) indicates that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost about 50,000 wired broadband subscribers in October. Airtel and Geo gained subscribers as the number of users of Airtel Extreme Fiber increased from 2.6 million in September to 2.67 million in October. On the other hand, the number of BSNL broadband subscribers fell from 7.8 million at the end of September to 7.75 million at the end of October. BSNL still dominates the wired broadband segment, while Reliance Jio tops the wireless broadband segment with 406.36 million members.

Reliance Jio had 1.52 million members in September, up from 1.7 million at the end of October.

At the wireless broadband space, Geo topped the list with 406.36 million members at the end of October. Airtel was second with 167.56 million members, Vodafone Idea was third with 120.49 million members, BSNL was last with 18.12 million members and Ticona was last with 0.31 million members. BSNL gained a significant number of subscribers in the wireless segment as its September numbers ended with 17.03 million subscribers.

By and large, BSNL holds only 3.42% of the broadband market share (wired + wireless). Reliance Jio had the highest market share at 55.85 per cent, followed by Airtel with 22.86 per cent. Vodafone Idea had a market share of 16.5% at the end of October 2020, and Atria Convergence had a market share of 0.24%.
